Dover Area Guide
Dover | Commercial Property
Dover District is located on the east coast of Kent at the narrowest point of the English Channel. In strategic accessibility terms, the District is connected to the national trunk road network from both the M20/A20 route via Folkestone, Ashford and Maidstone and the M2/A2 route via Canterbury and Faversham. The District is served by mainline rail services to London, with Dover town, Deal and Sandwich all connected to High Speed One. The town of Dover is positioned in close proximity to Channel Tunnel Rail Link services that can be accessed from Folkestone and Ashford.
Dover's history goes back to Roman times, but it was the Normans who built the town’s most famous landmark, Dover Castle. The castle dominates the towns landscape and is still in remarkably good repair after defending the town for 800 years. During the second World War the castle was the base for the planning of the evacuation of British troops from Dunkirk. There is a network of tunnels under the castle which now house a museum with exhibits from the war time period.
The other outstanding landmark of Dover, of course, is the world famous white cliffs which stretch for ten miles on either side of Dover. The best place to view these is from one of the cross-channel ferries and they provide a spectacular view when arriving in the country. There are superb walks along the cliffs in both directions.
Dover has some of the finest heritage assets in the country, set in an area of outstanding natural beauty within an hour’s train journey from London and within easy reach of the Continent. The area is rich in civil, military, religious and Cinque Port heritage.
Dover’s local economy is dominated by port activities which directly employ 4,000 people and support 22,000 jobs in the wider economy. The Port of Dover remains the UK’s busiest ferry terminal with routes to Calais and Dieppe, and also caters for ‘roll-on roll-off’ freight and cruise ship traffic.
New developments include the St James town centre redevelopment. Located in the heart of Dover this £60m development provides 120,000 sq. ft. of retail and leisure space, including a new multiplex cinema operated by Cineworld, 108 bed Travelodge Hotel, restaurants and new retail units anchored by M&S and Next.
New build industrial, trade park and retail schemes on Honeywood Parkway, White Cliffs, north of Dover Town Centre, has attracted B&M, Pets at Home, KFC, Subway, Eurocell, Action Carpets and Lokn’Store, all developed by Location 3 Properties / TradeMarq.
Coming Soon is Parkway Trade Park on Honeywood Parkway with pre-lets to Costa Coffee Drive-Thru, The Gym Group and Toolstation.
